A note from Jason...
I finally completed my scratch-built Thanksgiving Day in the morning. When
I started back in mid June, I had set a goal to be done by Thanksgiving, and
made it, barely. I worked on it almost every day after work, during
weekends, and sometimes even during my lunch hour. I still have to build the
case, but at least the model itself is done.
Here is a list of materials used for certain areas and parts.
1/4 foam board (sandwiched between artboard sheet): Hullframe
Thin artboard (posterboard): all superstructure, decks, and hullplates.
Electrical wire: All railings (soddered together)
Wood: Masts and hand-carved lifeboats
Various paint: for all colored surfaces
Thread: For rigging
Ping-pong ball: For grand staircase domes, hand drawn detail on surface
Plastic Sprue (from Revell 1/570th): For all vents, compass tower legs, and
center anchor crane.
Document Protector: All portholes and windows
While the materials used are odd, I wanted to get as good of detail as
possible without spending more money than I have at the moment. In the
future I would like to build a model of more "permanent" materials, but this
will do for now. It will be in a plexiglass case, so it will last a good
while. It was good practice for a future project made of more exotic
materials.
