Titanic model by
James Pepper
The port side displays the exterior of the ship, while the starboard
side is removed to display the interior. The scale is 1" = 20 ft. The
propellers, engine pistons, cranes, rudder and winches move. The detail
includes carpeting, floors, doors, walls, paneling, windows, fireplaces,
staircases, even the drapes in the First Class Reading Room! The lifeboats
are tied to the davits. Various rooms are labeled. The funnels, sections of
the roof, and the hatch covers can be removed to look down through the ship.
The ship is made of a variety of papers including poster board,
drawing paper, construction paper. Also the use of fine colored pencils, 3
bamboo skewers for the drive shafts, several paper-clips, a few toothpicks
(encased in paper) for the working pistons, some wire for the anchor chains
and string for the rope.
Two ships are finished, another 2 are built to E deck and another 4
are to F deck. Several years ago I built the Normandie for a friend who was
the attending physician on the dock for the burn victims. That ship was
lost. So I'm making enough of these ships to preserve the art. It took me 9
months to build the first ship.
My interest in the Titanic came from my Great Great uncle who missed
the boat train. He took the Lusitania to America. I am a graphic artist.
