TITANIC model by Daniel Hinson

Railings on the Revell kit have been sanded and Gold Medal Photo’s etched detail railing has been added. The anchor chains were also sanded away and real chains added. I added the center anchor since it is not on the Revell kit. Cranes were constructed using the existing crane bases in the kit. Extra ventilators have also been added. (I bought two kits to make use of the extra ventilators I needed, as well as a couple of lifeboats). I plan to use the extra hull and model parts I have left to build the Titanic wreck at some future date.

Rigging was done with nylon thread, and I actually "strung" various deck sections on the model before gluing them in the hull; first the bow section, then the poop deck, and finally the long boat deck with funnels completed. By building the model in this way, I had access to the underneath of the deck sections for threading the rigging.

Paint below the waterline is "Boyd Red." Deck color is a mixture of "Sand" and "Dark Tan." Funnels are simply "Tan." The stripe along the hull is "Zinc Chromate."

While taking the time to fix some errors on the kit, such as the bridge side-walls and other minor details throughout the model, I did not correct every error. The ventilator forward of the second funnel is facing the wrong way. Also, the exterior wall along the promenade (A) deck is a straight wall, and does not reflect the internal arrangement. I thought about correcting these errors at one point, but ultimately decided the extra effort was not worth it, since these details could not be seen easily. I did, however, place windows along A deck in their appropriate location, as best as I could.

All windows, in fact, are simply cut from any black decal I could find. And I had quite a few miscellaneous decals lying around from previous modeling projects. At some future date I plan to replace as many windows as possible on the kit with Mr. Beveridge's 1/570th scale decals, although some windows will be impossible to access on the completed model..

I "finished" my Titanic in August of 1998, but after discovering this website, I made some other modifications which I completed in March of 1999. This was actually my first "ship" model (unless you count my seaQuest model). Most of my modeling experience is with cars, spaceships (mostly Star Trek ships), and other futuristic vessels.
