1/570 scale Model
by Bruce Beveridge

The forecastle is still missing some details as I found that I should leave off a lot of the small stuff until the major stuff is applied. The center anchor is in place with my center anchor grating decal applied over acetate. I was surprised how good it looks. The railings are all GMM. Loren got the scale perfectly as evidenced by the foreward crane supports. The portholes along the gunwales are not completed yet. The hull paint is ruffed in. I used auto primer for the anti fowling paint. The windows along A and B decks on the hull have been thinned from the inside with a dremel tool. I also painted the inside edges with a gray paint to give the appearance of being thinner and more to scale. The yellow line will be added much later. The well deck recesses have been added because the model lacks these. The foreward cranes still need work. The DARK cables are two dark and the clamps need to be applied. The kit cranes had to have the bases shortened greatly because they sit to high as they are out of the box. The plastic railings have been removed. This process destroyed the raised plank lines. I used a dry brushing technique to bring back a resemblance of planking that looks real good. I used a Polyscale light tan as a base and then dry brushed Testors Model Masters brown over the top and then the same Polyscale tan over that again. The steam and electric winches have had the wheels added. The hatch over the #1 hold is wrong and I have to fix it. The capstan steam control wheels have been added. My decals are in place on the foreward end of the ship. The fore B deck decals were a waste of time. I had no idea that the foreward bulkhead was part of the foreward bridge piece and will be added later. I should have read ahead. The crew galley skylight decals are to big and will be replaced with smaller holes. The bollards are hand made on the well decks. The aft well deck has the recess added. The center mushroom vent broke off while I was applying the aft B deck piece. I had to fix the aft well deck crane bases, they are NOT round. The aft B deck, as you can see is nearly a complete rebuild. The actual entrance deckhouse is to far forward but I'll let that one go. I enlarged the Olympic plans out of the "Shipbuilder" ( the plans are at 1/167th scale )and used it to make a completely new docking bridge. The docking bridge that came with the kit is FAR to big so I replaced it. The phone, telegraphs, binnacle have been added. The wheel broke off and is now in the twilight zone of my work shop. Luckily I bought two sets of GMM parts. The white skylight/hatch covers over the third class room have been filed to be more accurate. I added the steam wheels here also. In the well decks, where the rust touches the white, I used strips of white Microscale decal sheets to get a perfect line. This model is real ruff at this point. I found that adding to many little things at first becomes a pain as they get in the way and break off.
