FYFE PATENT VENTILATOR |
Titanic had a type of passive mushroom type ventilator known as a Fyfe patent ventilator. I have included a drawing below with the Titanic images. All three Olympic class vessels had this type of ventilator. I am including only the Titanic images since it is the main subject of interest. There were at least three of these. They were located on the aft extension of Adeck and were next to the port and starboard railings behind deck benches. There were two on the starboard side and one on the port side. Titanic photos whichare attached document these locations.
I believe that there is strong suggestive evidencethat there was one more Fyfe vent on Titanic. Olympichad one on the aft port side aft of the raised Loungeroof on the port side next to the crew stairwayentrance door. We do not have direct photo evidenceof this vent on Titanic. However, although Titanichad different types of ventilators than early Olympic, she had vents in all the locations Olympic had. Titanic did have some additional vents, but of thelocations where vents were located on Olympic, nonewere eliminated on Titanic except for one duct typevent on Olympic's forecastle that was also eventuallyeliminated on Olympic. For these reasons I personallybelieve it is highly probable that the Fyfe locationdescribed above for Olympic also existed on Titanic.
