After 2½ years of solid work I have finally finished my Titanic models together with the display case. Everything was built by scratch in my garage at home in Hertfordshire, England which I converted into a workshop.
Work started in December 2002 with the construction of the 1912 version which was built using the Hahn plans for scale. This was completed around June 2004.
Once finished I was granted permission by my wife to disappear into the garage again to commence work on my next model. This was my 1986 wreck model built following the same 1:100 scale and methods as my previous model. This was finished in May 2005.
Finally I had to design and build a suitable case to display and preserve the models. I wanted a combined case to display the 1912 version in its full glory and the wreck down below in the shadows before and after. I decided to build the case myself in the true sense of scratchbuilding. This was made from angled steel, clear acrylic and wood. The overall size is 9.5ft x 5ft x 1.5ft and the base has caster wheels to help movement.
The whole project cost me in the region of £4000 ($7000) and to me worth every penny to enjoy the model and the interest of others who see it. I have also posted pictures of some earlier prototypes. One is a test for this model made in 1999 using two 1:350 Minicraft models and the other is a 1:150 scratchbuilt waterline model with lighting made in 1997. Useful experience for things to come.
I have been fortunate enough to have the model
in a recent British Titanic Society Bulletin which prompted a call from Arnie
Geller of RMS Titanic Inc. Both models have also previously been shown as Model
of the Month on this website which has been a valuable source of information,
which brings me to a word of thanks. Without this website, its contributors
and enthusiasts I would never of been able to gain deeper knowledge and motivation
to build my models.
Thank you all.
