TRMA Achievements

With the watchful eyes of one of our trustees of the TRMA, we were able to officially chang the description of a photograph that has been mis-identified in books and magazines for years and years. On February 17 2000, TRMA trustee, Scott Andrews wrote a letter to the Ulster Folk and Transport museum. He included diagrams and technical information on the device seen in pictures, and commonly thought to be a "McFarlane Watertight Door". Scott demonstrated and provided the factual information that this device is actually a "Sluice Valve". The UFTM checked their original archives and found Scott to be correct. Though they possibly read the handwriting of the original photographer, Robert J. Welsh, as stating a "Swiss Valve", the real truth in the matter is that it is a Sluice Valve. The UFTM has now officially changed the classification of photos # HG1998 and H1998A.

This is just another example of how the TRMA has corrected the history surrounding he Olympic class liners. Shown Below is the letter received sent by T. Kenneth Anderson, Department of Archival Collections at the Ulster Folk and Transport museum.

It should be mentioned that this mistake had been uncovered a few years ago, and not ALL of the books in print mis-identify this item. A case for point is the second edition of "HMHS Britannic: The Last Titan" by Simon Mills.
